Citibank explores mobile marketing
Hong Kong - Citibank is tapping into mobile marketing with the launch of a series of banner ads via Gravitas' mobile advertising network to push sales for its loan services.
The ads are displayed on iPhone AM730, one of the leading free Chinese newspapers in Hong Kong, and Bus x Map Share, an application with public transport information.
Ricky Chu, business director of Gravitas, said mobile advertising allows instant interactivity to drive audience engagement, data acquisition and impulse buying while reaching audiences on-the-go.
"Mobile is performing much higher than traditional online branding across those metrics.
"The leading marketers aren't simply looking at it as an advertising or promotional channel but as a key element of consumer engagement and their overall marketing strategies."
Chu added that banking and finance, cosmetics and fashion brands are the early-adopters on mobile advertising, and they should keep exploring the various ad formats on mobile platforms such as branded mobile applications.
Last month, Citibank launched its mobile application ‘Citi Mobile' in Hong Kong, offering users banking services and products on their phones.
Maggie Yung, country marketing director of Citi Hong Kong, said almost one in two people in Hong Kong owns a smartphone and the bank understands their need to be serviced in a more mobile way.

Mobile Banking Pros & Cons
Base on the Citi Bank case, they are successfully introduce the mobile application for its own customer. However, there are some points of pros and cons, which will be worth to analysis.
Pros
Latest update
– information and news become more flash and instance. Marketing campaign is much more easier to delivery to customers.
Banking Everywhere
– Mobile banking made the user can assess and manage their account in most of the time.
Pay Virtually
– Virtual money become more popular and made all the transaction simple.
Reduce Manpower
– If more of the people manage their account by mobile or online. Branches manpower, operation cost and size could be reduce respecitivly.
Cons
Security
– It is the biggest issue of all online business activity can not be totally resolve even we are using 128-bit encryption.
Internal Technical Problem
– Time consuming to recover, if any problem that case server down or service provider system been broken down.
External Technical Support
– Customer technical support investment needed and training also necessary for staff.

Citi Mobile allows customers to check account balances, send money, issue drafts, pay bills, make credit card payments, register for services like e-Statements, request for a cheque book, stop payments, and more.
To start using Citi Mobile, you need a Citibank Banking/Credit Card account, an active Internet PIN, a mobile number that is registered with the bank, and a Java-enabled mobile phone with a GPRS connection.
Citi Mobile can be quickly downloaded onto a mobile phone.
Customers can SMS MBANK followed by the last 4 digits of their Debit/Credit Card number to 52484. An SMS response will be delivered to the customer's mobile phone indicating the URL for Citi Mobile. This URL can be used to download Citi Mobile onto the mobile phone.
Security wise, Citibank says that that on Citi Mobile all customer interaction is https secured and encrypted using 128-bit SSL; further, no customer data is stored on the mobile phone.

Mobile payments have been around for sometime but this segment is primarily being driven by standalone payment technology players like paymate, mchek, ngpay and others. There has been very little if at all any activity from the banks side.
So this news is very welcome given that the mobile banking regulations were recently announced by RBI. Citibank today announced the launch of Citi Mobile a downloadable mobile application that provides on-the-go banking.
